How Fast Should Your Internet Speed Be?

How much internet speed do you require for all your online activities? How fast should the internet speed be? We are sure you’re not the only one who has these questions because, believe it or not, these are common questions you’ll come across online.

Everyone wants a fast enough internet speed. No one enjoys waiting for their movie to buffer or having the patience to go through a slow download.

Of course, every internet service provider offers a wide range of internet plans with various download and upload speeds. That said, WOW Internet offers great download speeds, and if you go for the higher plan, you will enjoy a good upload speed too.

A good internet speed depends on your and your household’s online activities. There’s no point in going for a high download speed plan when you have minimal internet use.

Therefore, in this article, we will discuss what Mbps refers to, how much you need, and how fast your download and upload speeds should be.

What Exactly Does the Term “Mbps” Mean?

Mbps, which stands for “megabits per second,” is a common unit of measurement for internet bandwidth. Knowing how many Mbps your internet plan offers can determine whether your home internet is fast enough for carrying out common things like streaming movies or downloading huge files.

How Much Mbps Do You Require?

The maximum throughput of your internet connection is measured in megabits per second. Although Netflix and other streaming platforms claim that 5 Mbps internet speed is enough to stream their content, it isn’t accurate.

You probably have more gadgets than you realize, quietly sucking up your internet bandwidth. If you don’t have enough Mbps, your internet speed will be impacted by other devices accessing your network, such as smart devices, laptops, and PCs in sleep mode.

Undoubtedly, the number of smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles linked to American Wi-Fi networks has more than doubled in recent years. That’s a lot of gadgets eating up your data plan.

So although 5 Mbps might be sufficient for a single user to stream a movie, having more than five users on the network necessitates a download speed of 150 Mbps or greater.

You’ll need an internet speed of 200 Mbps or more if you know you do heavy-bandwidth online activities, play games, or simply work from home, for which you need to be on Zoom regularly.

There’s a chance that the internet provider that met your needs a year ago isn’t the greatest option for you now. Keep an eye on the technologies your potential internet service providers offer, and learn how the new technologies can offer you higher internet speeds.

How Fast Should Your Download Speed Be?

The general rule of thumb for an internet connection’s minimum necessary download speed is 100 Mbps per user.

Of course, what defines an ideal download speed for you is heavily dependent on what you do online and how many devices are simultaneously connected to your Wi-Fi network. A connection speed of 10 Mbps is more than adequate for casual web browsing and email.

However, online streaming services like Netflix and Hulu might simultaneously use a lot of data transfer. If you want to avoid the wrath that buffering brings, you’ll need a download speed that can do some serious work if you have many TVs streaming movies and iPads streaming YouTube.

For instance, WOW Internet, a growing ISP in the U.S., has varying prices based on speed. You can choose from its 100 Mbps – 1.2 Gig plans. It also offers unusually high data caps, which is uncommon for a growing ISP.

How Fast Should Your Upload Speed Be?

An upload speed of 10 Mbps or more is considered fast. While fiber connections can provide gigabit upload speeds, some internet services still provide far slower ones.

When you upload something, you put it online. Traditional upload speeds have been substantially lower since most internet users spend time downloading rather than posting content. The download speed offered by an ISP is typically 15 times greater than the upload speed.

Upload speeds from a fiber internet provider are typically as fast as download speeds, sometimes exceeding 1 Gbps for the fastest plans.

    All in All

ISPs benefit from your demand for greater internet speed, even though there’s controversy over how much speed the average home customer requires.

You may get an idea of how much bandwidth your internet service provider requires by looking at their lists of concurrently connected devices. You could even speak to their customer service to get an idea of their speed’s reliability.
